TOPIC: Marketing

A female duck swims on a pond with a line of ducklings following behind her as an analogy for a small business owner attracting followers to their social media business page for more productive marketing. The text overlay reads "How to grow followers on your business Page".

When someone lands on your small business' social media Page, they make a decision within seconds. They'll ask themselves: "Is this relevant to me?"… "Can I trust this business?"… "Should I follow?"… If your social media Page isn't set up to answer these questions clearly, you're at risk of losing followers before you even have a chance to engage with them!

The good news? You don’t need to completely overhaul your social media strategy to make a big difference to your marketing. By reviewing and adjusting a few key areas of your Facebook or Instagram Page setup, you can improve your first impression and increase your chances of getting more followers on your small business Page.

In this blog, I’ll walk through:
- why that first impression matters so much,
- the five key elements that'll have a BIG impact on potential followers,
- practical tips to help you optimise your Page/s, visuals, and content, in order to attract more of the 'right' followers,
- a quick audit test YOU can do to see whether your Page/s is follower-worthy, and
- common mistakes that work against small business owners who are looking to grow their Page/s.
Let's get started…

Why First Impressions Matter on Social Media

On social media, first impressions happen fast – often in less than 3 seconds. When a potential customer visits your Page, on Facebook or on Instagram, they’re making a judgment within moments. Or less! If your Instagram bio is unclear, or Facebook 'About' doesn't draw them in immediately, if your visuals feel messy, or your content doesn’t connect, they’ll likely scroll away without giving your Page a second thought.

This is why getting those first moments right and being FOLLOWER-WORTHY is essential to growing your Page. In fact, I believe that making a powerful first impression is often the difference between a casual visitor and a loyal follower - the one who'll become a paying customer. When someone can instantly recognise who you are, what you offer, and why they should care, they’re more likely to stick around and engage with your content.

The Key Elements of an Impactful Social Media Page

Now that you understand the importance of first impressions, let’s break down the key areas you should focus on to improve your Page/s. Optimising these will give your small business marketing the best chance at connecting with potential followers.

  1. A Clear and Compelling Bio/ 'About' section

Whether it's on Facebook (where the bio is more commonly known as the 'About' page) or your Instagram Page, the same applies…
Your bio is likely the first thing visitors will read – or skim! – when they land on your social media Page. It needs to quickly tell them:

  • What you do
  • Who it’s for
  • Why it matters

If your bio leaves any room for confusion, visitors may so-called bounce (ie leave) and look for a business that communicates and/or resonates more clearly. A compelling bio should not just be about summarising your business or focusing too much on you, but be more about showing your potential followers what value they will get by following you. Reflect THEM!

Tips for Improving Your Bio:

  • Keep it simple and jargon-free.
  • Be specific about what your business does – no room for ambiguity.
  • Inject a little personality to make it feel human and approachable. This includes emojis or a touch of humour, if you like.
  • Include a clear Call To Action (CTA), such as direction to a link to your site, to a signature service/ product, or signing up to a freebie/ newsletter opt-in page.

Example:
A weak bio:
"Providing great service."
Better:
"Helping busy professionals organise their home offices with stylish, functional products. Follow for tips and exclusive offers!"

2. Consistent and Professional Visuals

The visuals on your social media page – including your profile picture/ icon, the cover photo on Facebook, and the overall aesthetic of your posts – play a huge role in building trust. Your followers are likely to judge your professionalism (for better or worse), based on how polished your visuals are. At very least, those visuals (photos, graphics or video thumbnails) should have a visual style that connects with the ideal audience member, any text should be uncluttered and easily legible at small scale, and feel consistently on-brand. A consistent visual style signals reliability, while a messy or mismatched aesthetic can confuse and turn people away.

Tips for Improving Your Visuals:

  • Choose a professional profile photo/ icon that represents your business, whether it’s a logo or a photo of you. Clarity really matters at this tiny scale!
  • Use a cohesive colour palette, perhaps being mindful or colour psychology, and aim to stick to that scheme throughout your future posts, too.
  • Make sure your Facebook cover photo, graphics, post photos and video thumbnails are high-quality (not blurry/ out of focus) and reflect your brand's personality.
  • Consider updating your Facebook cover photo/ Page's profile icon regularly to align with any new products/ services, or seasonal campaign.

For example, on Instagram, having a grid that’s visually appealing and consistent can help increase your chances of appealing to the right followers. This doesn't mean your grid has to be highly manicured in a visual checkerboard pattern… simply that a well-curated feed and appealing photos/ graphics/ thumbnails will signal to visitors that you put effort into your business and your online presence. They'll also be likely to browse posts that catch their eye straight away, helping you both connect from the outset.

3. Use of Instagram Highlights and Pinned Posts/ Reels

On both Instagram and Facebook, pinned posts and the Highlights feature on Instagram are essential tools for curating the first experience visitors have when they land on your Page. Pinned posts (also known as 'Featured posts' on Facebook) allow you to showcase your best content right at the top of your feed; You can select a single post to 'feature' on Facebook, and up to three posts (and Reels) to 'pin' on Instagram. While Instagram Highlights allow you to organise particular Stories into categories that are easy to navigate, making them act as a useful 'shop window' or introduction to your Page.

Tips for Improving Pinned Content and Highlights:

  • Pin content that directly communicates your business’ value – such as a new product launch, a customer testimonial, or an introductory post.
  • Use Instagram Highlights to showcase key information such as your product categories, business opening hours, reviews, and FAQs.
  • Refresh your pinned content periodically so it's fresh and to keep it aligned with your current offerings and business goals.

For example, on Instagram, you might create Highlights for “Customer Reviews,” “Behind the Scenes,” “How to Videos,” or “Special Offers” to make it easy for new visitors to understand your brand at a glance. Tip; avoid long Highlight titles that get cut off, and consider creating coherent on-brand Highlight covers too.

4. Content that Speaks Directly to your Ideal Audience Member

The content you share through social media marketing should resonate with your ideal customer/ client. If you’re posting generic content that doesn’t address the needs, wants, or pain points of your target audience, your followers may not stick around. They may get the impression you're "not really for them". This point lies at the heart of what I mean when I teach how business owners can start posting STRATEGICALLY.

Tips for Creating Engaging Content:

  • Create posts that directly answer your ideal audience member's common questions.
  • Share stories and behind-the-scenes content that humanizes your brand and helps followers relate to you.
  • Focus on creating content that adds value, whether through educational posts, such as tips and tutorials, through personality-infused story-telling, and through inspirational or relatable, light-hearted content with a dose of humour.
  • Use captivating captions that hook your audience from the first sentence and encourage them to engage.

Content that is relevant, helpful, and speaks directly to your audience (they feel: "Yes, that's so me!") is more likely to garner engagement and to be shared, both of which increase your chances of gaining followers.

5. Showcasing Social Proof

Visitors to your social media Page want to know that other people trust your business. Social proof, such as testimonials, customer reviews, and tagged posts, shows that real people value what you offer. If new visitors can see that others have had positive experiences with your brand, they’ll be more likely to follow and engage. As such, this idea should be an ongoing part of your content strategy to keep appealing to both existing and new followers!

Tips for Using Social Proof:

  • Share customer testimonials or reviews on your feed and in your Stories.
  • Encourage happy customers to tag you in their posts, or to use a branded hashtag that you can search for regularly.
  • Showcase collaborations, partnerships, or media mentions.

    • Does my bio tell that visitor who specifically it’s for, and why they should follow?
    • Are my visuals consistent and professional? Or has the style 'drifted'?
    • Does my content speak directly to my ideal customer?
    • Is there enough social proof to build trust?
  3. If you’re not happy with the answers, I suggest making some adjustments!

Common Mistakes That Turn Followers Away

Even small mistakes in your Page setup can cause potential followers to lose focus, or scroll away more quickly than you'd like. Here are a few things to watch out for:

  • A confusing or vague bio that doesn’t communicate who you are and what you do. Maybe it talks more about you, than about how you help your ideal person.
  • Low-quality images or inconsistent visuals that feel unprofessional/ unfocused.
  • Outdated content (such as a cover photo or 'featured' post) that no longer aligns with your current offerings or business goals.
  • Lack of social proof, which slows down trust-building between a customer and your business.

If you notice any of these gaps inn your Page, don’t panic! Small tweaks can quickly make a huge difference in how your Page is perceived.
